Activities of SODET

S.O.D.E.T has provided as platform to the DPSUs and Ordnance Factories to interact and work towards strengthening the Defence Forces by pooling the resources and working together to achieve self-reliance.


S.O.D.E.T started its activities with the first opening function held in Bangalore in April 2001 with Prof MGK Menon, eminent Scientist, as Chief Guest. A twin seminar on the following subjects was held:

Role of CEO's in Strategic Partnering for Technology Innovation & Sharing.

Manufacturing Technologies for the future. Since then following activities have been completed:

A compendium on manufacturing facilities has been prepared for use by all Members.

A Compendium on Technologies available at a various Member Organisations has been prepared and circulated among Members.

A report on the current CAD/CAM facilities, technologies has been prepared and also a seminar was held on the topic.

A report on current status and potential for high speed and high productivity machining technology and equipment was prepared and a seminar was held on the same.

A S.O.D.E.T Technovision-2002 Conference on "Product Life Cycle Management Technologies" was held jointly with IBM, Dassault Systems, CSM Software. The conference focused on IT Design of Aerospace & Defence Equipment through a Digital Product Date Processing Environment. This new technology is called PLM.

A S.O.D.E.T Technovision-2003 Seminar on In-House R&D was held jointly with United Service Institution of India on 8th January 2003 at New Delhi. Hon'ble Raksha Mantri Sri George Fernandes was the Chief Guest and Hon'ble Raksha Utpadan Rajya Mantri Sri Harin Pathak inaugurated the seminar. The Chief Executive of S.O.D.E.T Member Organisations were honoured by Hon'ble RURM during the occasion and Hon'ble Raksha Mantri presented R&D Innovation Awards to thirty-two (32) outstanding scientists from Member Organisations for their significant contributions in various R&D projects. A total of 9 (Nine) technical papers were presented by Member Organisations highlighting R&D efforts and achievements of their organisations.

In addition to the above, some of the Member Organisations invited all others for visiting the facilities and expertise and arranged seminars highlighting the specific technologies and facilities available with the Member Organisations to create greater awareness and for sharing and optimum utilisation.

Proposals are being discussed for inter-organisational projects sharing expertise, technologies, facilities and also risks.

Institution of S.O.D.E.T Award for Technology Development & Innovation with effect from 2004-2005 to encourage talent in Member Organisations.

The following Centers of Excellence have been identified for further strengthening and sharing among members:
    Composite Material Manufacturing facilities at HAL
    Mass Manufacturing facilities at BEL
    Flow Forming facilities at BDL
    Flexible Manufacturing Systems at Ordnance Factory, Trichi & BEML, Mysore.
2005 - 2006

A 2 day workshop on "Contract Management & Development of Negotiation Skills: was held at HAL Management Academy during September 2004. Secretary (Defence production), Ministry of Defence inaugurated the workshop.

S.O.D.E.T instituted Awards for "Technology Development & Innovation" with effect from 2004-2005 to encourage Talent in Member Organisations.

A 1 day workshop on "Cost Reduction" was organised at Bangalore on 31st August 2005. The Secretary (Defence Production), Ministry of Defence inaugurated the workshop.

A 2 day Seminar on "R&D Project Management" was held on 20th Sep 2005 and 21st Sep 2005 at BDL Hyderabad with the active support of M/S. BDL and M/S. MIDHANI. Success stories as well as problems faced by the Member organisations in the execution on R&D projects were shared besides Structural inputs given by the eminent faculty.

A 2 day Seminar on "Process Excellence through Six Sigma" was held on 7th Feb 2006 and 8th Feb 2006 at Bharat Electronics Quality Institute, Bangalore with the active support of BEL. About 26 senior executive attended the seminar.

A 2 day Seminar on "Corporate Strategic Planning" was held on 2nd June 2006 and 3rd June 2006 at Hotel Oberoi Grand Calcutta.

A 2-day Seminar on "Workshop on Export Manufacturing, policies and offset" held on 17th Nov 2006 and 18th Nov 2006 at Windsor Sheraton & Towers Bangalore.

2007 - 2008

A 1-day Seminar on "Micro Electro Mechanical System" held on 25th May 2007, at Bharat Electronics Ltd Bangalore.

International Seminal on "Defence R&D and Technology Management held on 29th Feb 2008 and 30th Feb 2008 at New Delhi.

A 1-day Seminar on "Nano-Technology" held on 25th Aug 2008, at Hotel Katriya De Royal, Hyderabad.

A 2-day Seminar on "Work Culture Building for Organisational Excellence" held on 24th July 2009 and 25th July 2009, at Hotel The LaLit Ashok, Bangalore.
